FOR Don Charter and his tomatoes it is around about that time of the year again.
The big reds are ripening all over the place because Don has again used his own fertilizer mixture. Last year the mix was ‘experimental’, but this year it was very effective.
The difference between those plants fed Don’s brew and those that were not is very noticeable. He said his fertilizer is a secret concoction that he intends to stick with.
“We planted in late November and I’ve got another crop ready to come on now, but they won’t be ready until another three to four weeks,” said Don
“By the look of them I’ll have to go in the Inverell show.
Don said he does have a slight surplus from time to time.
“We give them away to people in the family and that,” he said.
Don would also like to put all that growth to good use.
“I’d like to get a tomato competition going to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, if we can,” he said.
“I spoke to a person the other day who said it was a good idea, if we were able to get some people together and raise a bit of money.
“I reckon there would be a lot of people interested in it. You would have to judge by size, I reckon, like they do down in Gunnedah and that area. If anyone’s interested in getting a few people together to try it they can ring me on 6722 4606.”
