POLICE have charged a Mayfield man with carrying out a marriage unlawfully after investigations into the alleged underage marriage of a girl, 12, in Newcastle.
Child Abuse Squad detectives have been investigating an alleged underage relationship between a man, 26, and a young girl, 12.
The 26-year-old man has been charged with 25 counts of sexual intercourse with a child aged between 10 and 14.
The girl was taken into the protection of Family and Community Services, where she will remain until a permanent home for her is found.
Following further investigations the Mayfield man, 35, was arrested outside Parramatta police station about 4.30pm on Monday.
He was interviewed by police before being charged with solemnisation of a marriage by an unauthorised person.
He received strict conditional bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court on April 2.
Investigations are ongoing.
