The search continues for a pack of men who gang raped a 14-year-old schoolgirl in what police described as one of the most ”horrendous” sexual assaults in recent years.
Police said the victim had told them she was walking home from a friend’s house when she was ”physically overpowered” and raped by six men in a dimly lit park at Doonside, in Sydney’s west, on Saturday night.
Despite her attempts to struggle free, one man pinned her to the ground of a pathway in Bill Colbourne Reserve and raped her before standing aside and allowing five other men to sexually assault her about 11pm, police said. The attack was completely random and lasted about 30 minutes, police said.
Blacktown police superintendent Gary Merryweather said the assault was very unusual for the Blacktown area, despite some negative stereotypes.
”People think ‘it’s Blacktown, so it’s just the ordinary’,” Superintendent Merryweather said. ”People just stereotype quickly and don’t realise there are a lot of nice people in this community and they would be just as shocked as I am that this has occurred.”
Superintendent Merryweather said detectives had to wait one day until they could interview the year 10 student because she was suffering from shock.
”Being of such a tender age, she is traumatised to an extent that I can’t really describe,” he said.
”Six men attacking a 14-year-old girl is horrendous … The poor girl was just walking through the park, minding her own business, when she was approached by one male who touched her inappropriately and sexually assaulted her. This happened and then five other people came over and sexually assaulted her.”
After the men left, she walked to a friend’s house nearby and police were called.
Superintendent Merryweather said her family were devastated by the incident and were looking after the victim at home. There were no security cameras in the park but police had door-knocked residents to see if they had any home security footage that captured the gang running off after the incident.
”We are casting a fairly wide net to see what surveillance cameras in the local area [saw],” Superintendent Merryweather said.
”It took us time to interview the girl to ascertain what happened so the community has not had a great deal of information [or time] to come forward.”
Mother of three Daniella Diana, who lives opposite the park, said she could not believe a girl had been raped there. She said the park was usually filled with children.
”It’s very scary,” she said. ”I hope they catch these people because it’s just wrong. It’s disgusting.”
The men have been described as aged in their teens to early 20s.
