The first day’s event got underway in far from perfect conditions, with high winds challenging shooters to steal top scores.

Event 1: 25 target double barrel 25 target Graded Cash Divide Double Barrel:

AA Grade: 1st John Reid, Stephen Saul, Brad Hooper, Paul Wright, David Edmonds, Jeff Richardson, Aaron Knowles 25/25.

A Grade: 1st Romeo Spagnolo, Nik McRae, Greg Burey 25/25.

B Grade: 1st Will Cameron, Lachlan Schoenfisch 25/25, 2nd Courtney Watt.

C Grade: 1st John Barker, Allan West 24/25, 2nd Therese Nealon 23/25.

Event 2: 50 target Clay Targets Australia Medley Championship (25 Target Double Barrel, 25 target Single Barrel)

Overall champion: Geoff Baxter 69/70,

AA: 1st Dan Johnson 68/70, 2nd Cameron Schoenfisch 66/70, 3rd Kevin Bourke 58/60,

A Grade: 1st Barry Dray 68/70, 2nd Nik McRae 58/60, 3rd Ian Hurley 57/60,

Event 3: 50 target Sapphire City Firearms Double Barrel Championship:

A Grade: 1st Nick Tanner 67/68, 2nd Greg Hope 52/53, 3rd Cherie Hunter 54/55,

B Grade: 1st Bill Fletcher 50/53, 2nd Whitney Schoenfisch 49/53, 3rd Ross Aston 61/65,

C Grade: 1st Megan Wilkins 48/50, 2nd Gregory Brunsdon 47/50, 3rd Melissa Crosby 46/51

Shooters vying for top scores in the medley called for shoot-offs to determine placings and close scores across the board.

At the end of the day’s events the shoot off for the 2013 Mactaggart Family Golden Spoon (5 Double Barrel, 5 Single Barrel, 5 Point Score off 18 metres) was contested between David Edmonds, John Reid, Geoff Baxter, Dan Johnson, Brad Henshall, Dale Ellis and after a few early departures, it was Brad Henshall and veteran shooter Geoff Baxter left to battle it out.

With matching scores, the shooters were target for target until the 30th pull, when Henshall bowed out with a dropped clay to Baxter’s well-deserved win.

Day two saw shooters line the range for another full day of events, with a good number of contestants shooting all possibles.

Event 4: 25 target Graded Cash Divide Double Barrel:

AA Grade: 1st Greg Graham, Allan Mills, Craig Norman, John Reid, Brad Hooper, Henry Phillip, David Edmonds, Tammy Henshall, Brad Henshall, Dale Ellis, Kevin Bourke, Aaron Knowles 25/25.

A Grade: 1st Greg Hope, Hugh Faris, Bart Crosby, Greg Burey 25/25.

B Grade: 1st Julie Sainsbury, Brett Monckton 23/25; 2nd Ian Sullivan, Bill Fletcher, John Clark 22/25.

C Grade: 1st Paul Reid, John Barker, Gregory Brunsdon, Brendon Watt, Therese Nealon 23/25.

With the fifth event closing, top scoring shooter battled it out for the overall champion. The field narrowed to John Reid and Allan Mills, inseparable for an incredible 113 targets, until Reid was eventually named the winner.

Event 5: 50 target Glen Innes Veterinary Hospital Double Barrel Sapphire Event:

Overall champion: John Reid 163/163,

AA Grade: 1st Allan Mills 162/163, 2nd Aaron Knowles 104/105, 3rd Stephen Saul 50/51,

A Grade: 1st Greg Hope 92/93, 2nd Barry Dray 90/91, 3rd William Saul 59/60,

B Grade: 1st Ross Aston 61/62, 2nd Brett Monckton 48/50, 3rd Owen Larkings 54/57,

C Grade: 1st Greg Brunsdon 47/50, 2nd Brendon Watt 52/56, 3rd Grahame Armour 51/56.

Event 6: 25 target Klingner Honey Co Pointscore Championship;

Overall champion: David Edmonds 105/105,

AA Grade: 1st Greg Graham 102/105, 2nd John Reid 95/96, 3rd Jeff Richardson 94/96,

A Grade: 1st Greg Burey 86/90, 2nd Barry Dray 95/90, 3rd Geoff Jacobson 70/70,

B Grade: 1st Brett Monckton 74/75, 2nd Ross Aston 69/75, 3rd Ian Sullivan 73/81,

C Grade: 1st Grahame Armour 99/105, 2nd Gregory Brunsdon 77/84, 3rd Brendon Watt 74/84.

Closing the second day of events, the high gun honours were presented, with the ladies category calling for a 15 target shoot-off to determine the winner.

The Macansh Tin Tray was awarded to the Guyra Clay Target Club, with Guyra producing the highest score across the six events.

With thanks to volunteers, competitors and sponsors, local clay target shooters wrapped up another successful competition, with special thanks to John Mactaggart and family for their sponsorship throughout the year and for providing the annual Golden Spoon trophy.

The club’s next monthly shoot will be held on March 1, from 1pm.
